Description
Rara Avis
An uncommon individual whose qualities make it unique in its species. This Chardonnay is a unique wine that reveals Bodega Malma’s terroir in all its purity.
Malma is a term native to Patagonia, meaning pride. Pride in the journey taken and in what has been accomplished. Bodega Malma, owned by the Viola family, pioneers in viticulture in San Patricio del Chañar, honors its name by filling us with pride with wines that reflect the terroir and the care put into them.
Patagonia
The Patagonia wine region, located in the southern part of Argentina, is a notable and emerging wine-producing area. It spans across two provinces: Río Negro and Neuquén. San Patricio del Chañar is a notable sub-region located in the Neuquén Province of Patagonia, Argentina. This area has gained recognition for its high-quality wines and unique terroir. It’s situated in the northwestern part of Neuquén Province at an altitude of approximately 300 to 400 meters above sea level.
The region has a cool, dry climate with significant diurnal temperature variation. This means there is a large difference between daytime and night time temperatures, which is ideal for viticulture. The cool nights help to preserve acidity in the grapes, while the warm days promote ripening. The soils in San Patricio del Chañar are predominantly alluvial, with a mix of sand, clay, and gravel. These well-drained soils are conducive to growing high-quality grapes with concentrated flavors.
Viticulture & Vinification
Massal selection of ungrafted root-stock Chardonnay, trained on bilateral cordon with two buds per
position. Yield controlled at 9,000 kg per hectare. Well-drained soils with plenty of medium and coarse fragments, moderately deep, and with very little organic matter.
Grapes received in the cellar without added
sulfur and very gently pressed as whole clusters. Static and clean settling. Fermented in stainless steel tanks at temperatures between 14°C-16°C for 15-18 days. Clean settling and maintenance of fine lees in suspension, partly in tank and partly in French oak barrels for 4 months. 100% of the wine without malolactic
fermentation.
Wine
Golden in colour with very complex, pineapple, white fruits, subtle honey, toasted bread, and well-integrated oak aromas. Very present mineral notes provided
by soils composed mainly of a high-calcareous profile with stones of medium and large caliber and a smaller, lower, clayey sector with some salinity. On the palate it’s unctuous, with great volume in the mouth, and very balanced acidity. Prolonged and persistent finish in the mouth. Perfect synthesis between structure, freshness, and elegance. Certified Vegan.
