The Winemaker

As the name suggests “Flying Lessons”, exploring life and the vine without limits! Another single vineyard wine coming mostly from ungrafted vines of an average age of 140 years (therefore pre-phylloxera). The firs tvintage ever of this wine & the first guest for Flight Lessons is Jorge Navascués. If Jorge is a leading name in the wine world, his father Jesús was no less so. Jesús Navascués was also the son of a winemaker. All of 12 million kilograms of grapes passed through his hands and he transformed them into wine!

Navarra DO

Navarra is a wine region in northern Spain, known for its diverse and high-quality wines. It is situated in the Ebro River basin, south of the Pyrenees Mountains, and shares borders with France to the northeast. The region has a rich history of winemaking, with evidence of vine cultivation dating back to the Roman era.

Terroir & Innovation

The region’s diverse geography, which includes plains, valleys, and mountains, contributes to the variety of wines produced. Different microclimates and soil types create ideal conditions for growing various grape varieties.

Navarra has a balance of traditional winemaking practices and a willingness to experiment with modern techniques. This combination allows winemakers to create wines that reflect both the region’s heritage and contemporary trends.

Vintage

2016 harvest was smaller due to the drought that characterized this vintage and the millerandage of garnacha grape. Yields were lower also in the other varieties. The drought was slightly relieved in mid- September, This rain and the beginning of cooler nights made the grapes undergo a great technological improvement. It was a slow and selective harvest. Grapes arrived in the winery in an excellent sanitary condition, so the quality factor of this vintage was clearly this natural selection that made the smaller amount of grapes harvested were of excellent quality.

Vinification

Hand harvesting of the best bunches in 15 kg crates. Alcoholic fermentation with native yeasts in two 500 liter French oak barrels. Malolactic fermentation and aging for 12 months in two-year old 500 and 220 liter French oak barrels. Gentle clarification and filtration, without stabilization. This results in a wine with minerality and a distinctive character which is also persistent on the palate.

Wine

Clear, bright, mid-intensity, garnet colour with a clean and intense nose. Fruits of the forest and red fruit aromas with hints of earthiness and spice. Palate is dry and with a fresh marked acidity. Broad and balanced, full and meaty with flavours of fruits of the forest and some spice. Some attractive bitterness and green notes, characteristic of the grape variety. A wine with minerality and distinctive character. Persistent on the palate. Ideal with pasta, pulses, cured meats and charcuterie and any type of grilled meat.

Ideal serving temperature 16ºC.
