Description

Vintage

Wines from Dreissigacker stand for the highest quality, a long aging period under perfect conditions and, above all, for pure aromas – including the Wunderwerk Pinot Noir 2017. The Pinot grapes from organic cultivation ripened in Bechtheim’s top locations and were green harvested in summer.

Due to a cool wine year and late frosts in April of the year, the 2017 harvest produced low yields. Both are very beneficial for the mature Wunderwerk. In order to survive the transport to the Dreissigacker winery as undamaged as possible, the grapes for Wunderwerk are carefully placed in small boxes after selective hand picking.

Once there, they carefully separate the berries from the stalks to prepare them for the following work steps. All of these factors suit the mature Wunderwerk particularly well – an elegant, powerful and very classic Pinot Noir.

Vinification

In order to emphasize the pure aroma, which the soil and vines of the Rheinhessen top locations have, the red wine mash for the Wunderwerk ferments spontaneously for about three weeks.

During fermentation, the pomace cap is worked for three times a day so that the berry skins always remain in contact with the developing wine and ideal color extraction can take place.

The finesse and harmony of the Wunderwerk 2017 stem from the storage on the whole yeast for three years in barriques. The barrels give the wine delicate spice and subtle vanilla aromas and also provides depth and complexity.

This is a typical Pinot Noir, inviting on the nose, with an abundance of red berry aromas. The palate matches the sensuality of the nose with a velvety structure and a perfect balance of red fruits, acidity & tannins.

Region

Rheinhessen is a very famous wine region in Germany, located in the state of Rhineland-Palatinate. It is one of the country’s 13 official wine regions and is known for its rich winemaking history and high-quality wines. Rheinhessen is the largest wine-producing region in Germany, covering an area of approximately 26,500 hectares of vineyards.

Rheinhessen lies to the west of the Rhine River and is bordered by the Nahe wine region to the northwest and the Pfalz wine region to the south. The region’s landscape is characterized by gently rolling hills and a temperate climate that is influenced by the river.

Climate & Terroir

Spring in Rheinhessen tends to be cool, which can be challenging for the early growth of grapevines. Frosts can occur in spring, posing a risk to the young buds.

Summers in Rheinhessen are generally warm, allowing the grapes to ripen and develop their flavors. However, the presence of the Rhine River and its cooling effect helps to prevent extreme heat waves.

The region benefits from a relatively long growing season, allowing the grapes to reach full maturity. This extended ripening period contributes to the development of complex flavors and balanced acidity in the wines.

The region’s moderate climate with warm days and cool nights in autumn is particularly favorable for the late ripening grape varieties like Riesling. This combination helps the grapes retain acidity while achieving sufficient sugar levels, leading to the production of high-quality wines.

Ideal drinking temperature 16° Celsius.
