Region

The Southern Rhône Valley is a renowned wine region located in the southeastern part of France. It is one of the most important wine-producing areas in the country and is famous for its diverse range of high-quality wines. The region stretches along the course of the Rhône River, covering several departments in the Provence-Alpes-Côte d’Azur and Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes regions.

Châteauneuf-du-Pape is a famous wine region located in the southern part of the Rhône Valley in southeastern France. The name “Châteauneuf-du-Pape” translates to “New Castle of the Pope,” referring to the summer residence of the Pope during the 14th century. The region is renowned for producing high-quality red wines, primarily blends dominated by Grenache grape along with Syrah, Mourvèdre, and other approved varieties (13 in total.)

Climate & Terroir

The region’s terroir is diverse, with a combination of soil types including galets (large, rounded stones), clay, and sand. The galets help retain heat and reflect it back to the vines, aiding in the ripening process. This, along with the Mediterranean climate, contributes to the unique characteristics of Châteauneuf-du-Pape wines.

The region also experiences a Mediterranean climate with hot, dry summers and mild winters. The proximity to the Rhône River contributes to the moderation of temperatures, helping to create favorable conditions for grape ripening. The ample sunshine and the Mistral, a strong, dry wind that can sweep through the region, also play roles in the grape-growing process.

Ideal drinking temperature 18°C.
