Châteauneuf-du-Pape is a famous wine region located in the southern part of the Rhône Valley in southeastern France. The name “Châteauneuf-du-Pape” translates to “New Castle of the Pope,” referring to the summer residence of the Pope during the 14th century. Climate & Terroir
The region’s terroir is diverse, with a combination of soil types including galets (large, rounded stones), clay, and sand. The galets help retain heat and reflect it back to the vines, aiding in the ripening process. This, along with the Mediterranean climate, contributes to the unique characteristics of Châteauneuf-du-Pape wines.
The region also experiences a Mediterranean climate with hot, dry summers and mild winters. The proximity to the Rhône River contributes to the moderation of temperatures, helping to create favorable conditions for grape ripening. The ample sunshine and the Mistral, a strong, dry wind that can sweep through the region, also play roles in the grape-growing process.
Ideal drinking temperature 18°C.
